I find that a lot of the most striking short films I see have a commerce aspect to them. Films like the There is Only One Sun or The Shock Doctrine which are basically commercials. The Lady Noire Affaire is the latest in this line of artistic product promotion, a mystery thriller described as “Hitchcock-ian”, and which was commisioned by the fashion house Dior. Dior evidently hopes to jump aboard the viral bandwagon, and has sought to build up anticipation and involvement with the film through a Twitter feed, which reveals a clue concerning the mystery each day. Unfortunately in trying to build mystery they succeeded to too large a degree—the film does not make a lick of sense. Evidently it is part of a series, so we’ll see if plot development moves forward. And I will follow the next installments. The film re-teams director Olivier Dahan with starlet Marion Cotillard of La Vie en Rose fame and oozes the kind of style you’d expect from a film connected to high fashion. Good lord is Ms. Cotillard lovely! I had no idea. Can’t wait to see her in Michael Mann’s eagerly awaited new film Public Enemies. For now I’ll sit back and soak in some ultra-stylish nostalgia. If anybody has a take on what going on in the film I’d lve to hear it.
