With names like Ben Proudfoot, Cyril Aris, Clint Bentley, Aneil Karia, Samuel Abrahams, Oscar Hudson, Madeleine Sims‑Fewer, and more represented in this year’s programme, it would be easy for us to focus solely on the feature films at the BFI London Film Festival. While we’d love for our previously featured filmmakers to continue making shorts indefinitely, it’s incredibly rewarding to see so many alumni not only transitioning to features but also showcasing their work at some of the world’s most prestigious festivals.

As we continue to follow the careers of our alumni with excitement, we’re equally eager to spotlight the next generation of directors rising through the industry. As usual, this meant turning our attention to the short film programme at LFF. For many outsiders, the 2025 shorts selection might appear dominated by familiar names like Idris Elba and Letitia Wright – but the real excitement lies elsewhere, in the films made by talents you’ve yet to discover.
