Parents can go to extraordinary lengths when they believe they are protecting their children, particularly when they feel that child has been threatened. Sinan Taner's tense and atmospheric short film, 1:10, explores that instinct with unsettling accuracy. What begins as a seemingly ordinary day gradually escalates into an explosive confrontation after one father becomes convinced his son is being physically bullied by another child and decides to intervene himself.

"The incident felt both absurd and tragic"

Taner is careful not to rush towards that inevitable conflict. Instead, he patiently cultivates an atmosphere of unease through a succession of seemingly minor social transgressions: a man rudely claiming a seat in an auditorium, a woman delaying a queue at a kiosk, small moments of everyday friction that quietly accumulate. That simmering tension finally boils over when a bout of childish roughhousing culminates in a slap. From that moment onwards, the collision between the two fathers feels less like a surprise than an inevitability.

The film's realism is hardly accidental. Taner explains that 1:10 grew out of a childhood memory he was never able to shake. “After a harmless argument between me and a classmate, the conflict unexpectedly escalated when the other child's father confronted and threatened my father,” the writer-director recalls. Looking back, he describes the experience as "both absurd and tragic", prompting him to build a narrative that examines broader questions surrounding masculinity, public behaviour and cultural identity.

Formally, 1:10 reinforces those ideas through its restrained visual language. Told predominantly through a series of carefully composed wide shots, the film consistently refuses to isolate its central characters. Instead, Taner frames the confrontation as a communal event, drawing our attention not only to the two fathers but to the people witnessing their behaviour. During the climactic argument, it is often the reactions of the surrounding crowd that prove more revealing than the confrontation itself. The sound design works in a similarly expressive way: ambient noise falls away, allowing seemingly incidental details - a crying baby, a barking dog - to take on an almost symbolic weight.

"I wanted to explore the irony and tragedy of how seemingly insignificant moments can affect an entire community," Taner explains, confirming that the film's true subject extends well beyond the argument at its centre. His additional interest in "the similarities and differences between the way children and adults behave" ultimately reveals 1:10 to be less a story about playground conflict than one about inherited behaviour. By shifting our attention from the confrontation itself to the community forced to witness it, Taner transforms a seemingly ordinary dispute into a quietly devastating study of collective responsibility, leaving us to question who, in situations like these, is really setting the example.
