Possibly the most anticipated animated short film of 2011, David O’Reilly (creator of 2010 Top Ten short Please Say Something) has placed his 17min magnum opus, The External World onto Vimeo. The External World‘s tagline is simple—”A boy learns to play piano”, but in O’Reilly’s work relatively simple scenarios and primitive designs hide emotional and technical complexities. The film debuted last summer at Venice, which was quite an honor since non-italian short films almost never play that festival, and moved on to win the Grand Prix at Ottawa. It had its U.S. debut recently at Sundance, and now in rather quick order,  is online. Very nice. Expect a longer more in-depth review of the film soon, but right now we need to watch it a few more times. ^_^
