The Man Who Met Himself

Directed By Ben Crowe
Made In USA

man_himselfI recently enlisted Andrew’s help with a little Super-8 film project of my own, sparking a personal interest in the form. My curiosity is your gain in the form of The Man Who Met Himself, a 10 minute film directed by a young Brit, Ben Crowe.

Great title aside, the film has a claim to fame by being the first Super-8 film in ages to be nominated for the Short Film Palme D’Or at Cannes. It’s a bit of a surreal piece, following a private investigator as he looks into the apparent suicide of a young man named Stephen Maker. The Super 8 photography here is gorgeous and the look, coupled with the mysterious mood and vague sense of paranoia, recalls such classics as Blow Up and The Parallax View.

At the same time, it’s only fair to warn you that it can be frustrating to watch. I’ve seen it a few times and I feel I gain more from various commentaries on it than from actually watching the damn thing. Basically I do not understand it. If you have a good take on it please share in the comments.
