dir: College Humor, 3:00—A site with continually good original online content, man that is the golden goose everybody is looking for. Funny shorts that aren’t the newest viral video of a cat being spanked, but instead concepts and scripts that are actually acted out? That would be cool. I’m not saying that Collegehumor achieves that hallowed status, but their original content often ain’t all that shabby. Take this week’s short for example, a humorous piece that borrows the look and feel of The Office and transports it into the editorial room of the stoner mag High Times.
This isn’t high art, but you don’t need to have a poster of Bob Marley on the wall to enjoy it either. It is the kind of well acted, well written spoofing that Saturday Night Live used to be known for. (I haven’t been keeping up actually, is it trendy to diss SNL again yet?) Sound work and set design are minimal but well thought out, the camera work faithfully evokes its popular reference, and notice how the reoccurring joke is satisfyingly concluded…ah never mind, don’t overthink it… It’s funny!
