As you might have heard, Cannes is getting underway. While you don’t get to see any of the official competition films, Cannes does have this cool thing called the Short Film Corner, which is a get together of short film makers as an adjunct to the festival. Over 1400 short films are participating this year and via the NFB and Youtube’s participation, we all get to vote online for which of the ten finalists is our favorite. View the films via the NFB page. Polls are open till the 20th, though for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out how to vote (help?).

The Black Hole—9/10: Short and Satisfying
Sebastian’s Voodoo—9/10: Gorgeous independent CG
Reach—6/10: Nice animation, the emotional content falls flat
Legacy—4/10 Good Look, nice technique (all one take), but nonsensical
Dr. Mori’s Teleshopping—3/10 Black Humor entirely in Japanese from Greek Filmmaker(?)would’ve liked subtitles.
Its a little late, but for those who are curious, Sebastian’s Voodoo by Joaquin Baldwin ended up taking the prize. The film was nominated for an Annie last year too, and is pretty damn good.
For sheer originality, my vote would have gone to The Facts in the Case of Mister Hollow…
